Murali's 'doosra' banned

The International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Tuesday it supported the decision of Sri Lankan authorities to instruct off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan not to bowl his doosra delivery. ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said the sport's ruling body had decided the delivery was in breach of the laws of the game. "The degree of straightening (of Muralitharan's arm) is well outside the ICC's specified levels of tolerance," Speed said in a statement. "Sri Lanka Cricket has now advised the ICC that it has instructed Mr Muralitharan not to bowl this delivery in international cricket. The ICC supports this action." Speed said he hoped the action by Sri Lanka Cricket in recognising that the delivery did not comply with ICC regulations would prevent Muralitharan being reported again. Muralitharan, who became Test cricket's leading wicket taker on Saturday when he claimed his 520th victim in the first match of the current series against Zimbabwe, was reported in March during Sri Lanka's home series against Australia. The doosra delivery spins in the opposite direction to normal off spinners. |
