UP govt to probe bribery allegations

Ritesh Yadav's statement came days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended Maharashtra batsman Abhijit Kale on allegations by national selectors Kiran More and Pranab Roy that the player had offered them money for a place in the Indian team. Kale, 30, has denied the allegations and challenged his suspension in court. Yadav said two selectors had last year asked him to pay 50,000 rupees for a place in the state under-17 side. "If need be, the state government will bring out a law to stop corruption in sport," Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister R.K. Chaudhary said on Tuesday. The Indian media has reported charges from across the country by other domestic players, who say local selectors have often demanded bribes from them. The BCCI, which has launched an inquiry into the Kale allegations, has called a special meeting on Sunday to discuss the issue. |
