Parthiv hits maiden hundred

July 10, 2003 22:44 IST

Young wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel scored a magnificent career-best 129 to place India 'A' in a position from where they can push for victory against Yorkshire in the three-day day match at Headingley, on Thursday.

Patel's maiden first-class hundred enabled India 'A' to declare their first innings on 336 for eight, a lead of 90 runs over Yorkshire's 246.

India 'A' had already claimed one wicket in the second innings, with Yorkshire placed at 27 for one at close of the second day.

The day undoubtedly belonged to the 18-year-old Patel, who has already played seven Test matches and six one-day internationals for the India senior team.

Coming at the fall of vice-captain Hemang Badani, when the score was 112, Patel played like an experienced batsman, facing 146 balls during his 176-minute stay at the crease. He struck 22 boundaries before falling as the seventh wicket with the total reading 297.

Wasim Jaffer was another batsman to shine for the Indians, scoring most of the runs in the morning session after India 'A' resumed at their overnight 29 for one. Jaffer scored 67 runs, 60 of which came in boundaries.

Amit Mishra also produced a fine effort, making an unbeaten 52 runs, with four fours and a six, in what was only his second half-century in first-class cricket.

Mishra and Patel added 69 runs for the seventh wicket.

Amit Bhandari took the only wicket to fall in Yorkshire's second innings, when he had opener Chris Taylor caught by captain Shiv Sunder Das for 4.
