Today, it's UNIX. But, tomorrow, it'll be Linux. NT can never be in the picture. So, if we are talking long time, it is better to go for Linux. It will win hands-down over the competition. I feel Linux based servers are better today than the rest. I am not very comfortable with NT at all.

I have been using both Windows NT and Unix to use the Internet and I feel that it is UNIX or even Linux which beats Windows hands down. There is no doubt about the fact that Windows NT is not stable when you are running certain Java applets online. I have been booted from using various Java applets a lot of time when I am using the Internet from a Windows NT machine but this has never happened to me when I am on a machine using UNIX. Also the fact that Windows NT has a user-friendly interface should not be a major factor to choosing NT even UNIX and Linux have Graphical User Interfaces like X-Windows, Motif, FVWM etc... which can be used to get the same kind of user friendliness as offered by Windows. Of course that does mean that the user has to learn a new OS but then it also translates into being able to use the net in the most efficient manner.

Linux should take over a majority of the Indian and developing markets after it comes out with support for Windows applications or full compatibility for files created on the Windows platform. Until such time people will be reluctant to give up their Windows habit or relinquish their investment in Windows and Windows based products.

The choice is clearly Linux. It is the most stable, has the best support and documentation, will run on almost any hardware, and of course has the lowest cost. If you are getting an almost dreamlike combination such as the above, almost for free, why even bother about anything else?

+ Certified pool of professionals
+ full range of products
- NT is not as mature as UNIX but catching fast
- NT will finally turn out to be user friendly flavour of UNIX.

I would go in for Unix or Linux, though I have not used Linux much, but the strength of these OSs are anyway far higher and time-tested (Unix) than WinNT. WinNT anyway is known to have 'adopted' features from a variety of OSs and packaged them together, with obvious grey areas.

Price = ridiculously expensive for a humongous beast that chokes to death after it has eaten gigabytes of RAM.

WINDOWS NT..No doubt about that. The reasons are obvious, Microsoft can integrate everything ...This of course allows you to never use your own brain as long as Microsoft thought that what you want to do was important enough to integrate and that you can afford the per-seat/per-connection license fees. Linux does not have fees and no redefinition to prevent use in whatever new fashion you invent. Microsoft has redefined "concurrent license" several times, always to prevent using their software in "unauthorised" ways.

WINDOWS NT..WINDOWS NT..WINDOWS NT..WINDOWS NT and Windows NT ! It is easy to use and can integrate all kind of tools (front-end to backend tools). And what else can a user ask for but having everything in one place and that too manageable without rummaging their heads in search of proper command syntaxes for the simplest operations !!! As for reliability, it is quite reliable.
