LINUX LINUX LINUX all the way as far as ISP's are concerned. Here is a free OS based on proven technology offering all and more that ISP's desire...why would anyone opt for NT and pay incremental revenue to the Microsoft treasury? any naysayers???

Unix Machines (Sparc's/HPs) will reign the server side
which demands extreme reliability and performance.
NT: will obviously be the darling on the client side. There is no argument..its easy to install/use by virtually "anyone".
Linux: My choice on client side..and can also be efficiently used for medium performace servers !! Obvious the kind of hardware which NT is used on
"do-not" have the power to sustain on the server-side. Anyone who is little more than a lame user will go for
Linux/Unix box..!! (atleast in the forseeable future).
Summarizing,
Server Side: UNIX WILL Take over the high end
NT/LINUX will fight for the meduim slice.
Client Side: NT/98/2000 will be predominant
LINUX: ardent fans/techs
Disclaimer:
There are my opinions and will never be in 100% inline with any other living being on the planet Earth (not sure about somone on Mars).

Some form of Unix for sure, not necessarily Linux. The BSD family has more robust networking, so they would be safe bets. FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD. I doubt NT
will sway much of the ISP market.

Windows is great and excellent for games. For serious work, I stick to UNIX. Unix's multitasking and protected memory support are far superior to NT's jack of all trades act. Scalability, which is a major issue for ISP's, is pretty limited in NT.(Wait for the next chip from Intel!) Without any major changes in the OS scenario, I say Unix is the undisputed leader. All I can say about my 400MHz NT box is it's one hell of a playstation...

Linux..'coz when the hens and chickens are back in the coop for the day you should not count only the eggs which the hens have laid but you should take note how many chicks are there? The Open source model of Linux is for the benefit of our student community and they will take lead...who can afford a Rs 5000/- OS when U have something powerful for FREE !! Even the ISPs will give them the go-by.
My vote is against Meena Ganesh's email which is plain fact.....read between the lines.
NT SUX! Unix if you have money, Linux if you have geeks around

Recently, I have started working with the Linux operating system. My main platform is still Win 98, mainly due to so many applications available. I am amazed at the stability of Linux and if Win NT is anything like Win 95 or 98, I am sure Linux or Unix will emerge as the hands down winner.

It is so unpleasant to argue that which is going to win ?.
I call even Rediff is going out of its way to do this ?.We all know UNIX is very superior Operating System. Windows NT is gaining grounds. As I am a leading systems integrator ( Integrated very large systems over the years). I found there are very good positive points in windows NT 5.0 for web hosting /e-commerce than any other Unix system. Folks I am not arguing that Windows NT can handle more load than UNIX ( Certainly not !). But my point is as this argument very specific to India, it is important worry more about tele-communication infrastructure in India than what shit operating supports at the back-end. I can live happily connecting three 8 CPU NT machines rather than 1 giant UNIX machine ( May be same cost , but better MFBT). I would be very glad if Rediff pressurised Indian politicians to build solid infrastructure in India, then I think we can have lot of time in dealing with which operating system it supports at the back-end. It is like thinking of being a grandpa before even having a single child.

NT is the way to go. Unix has no apps.. Linux is not supported.

I think its going to be NT all the way. As of now, MS rules the desktop market. Linux & Unix because of their stable nature have a big share in the server market. But with MS stepping into the server business, the days of Linux & Unix are over. They have been responsible for their own downfall. With so many (incompatible) versions floating around, people are bound to opt for MS.

Clearly Linux. It's cheap, robust and proven.
Where do you want to go tomorrow? :-)

Linux is not from a single bodied company , so there may not be any technical support for this operating system. This may shoot up the maintenance cost if you go for Linux. So my choice narrows down to Unix and NT. Out of this two , as a Windows NT developer , I would prefer Windows NT to be the platform for future digital India
