Hiring activity in the IT/telecom space increased by two per cent in April as appraisals in the sector were below expectations, prompting employees to pursue better opportunities, says a report.

According to the latest RecruiteX data, the recruitment index of TimesJobs, the results of the appraisals are beginning to be felt in the job market, as people look to enhance their compensation from outside current organisations, especially in the IT/telecom sector.

"Indian IT majors have set the market mood with appraisals that were below expectations. IT professionals seem to be opting for better opportunities in e-commerce and product domains, leaving employers to bump up hiring to manage and rebuild the depleting talent pipeline," TimesJobs dot com COO Vivek Madhukar said.

Talent demand in the IT industry had slipped by three per cent in March but hiring picked up again in April with the rolling out of appraisals, the report said.

The other functions that were in demand in April include media and entertainment, sales and business development, administration and marketing & advertising.

Hiring for engineers, on the other hand, posted a 10 per cent drop during the month. The demand for this function has stabilised since the last one year (April 2014 - April 2015).

City-wise, Delhi NCR was the only metro to report a rise in hiring activity in April.

Among the top 10 locations, Vadodara witnessed the maximum rise in hiring activity, followed by Chandigarh, during April.

On the other hand, Bengaluru posted the highest drop in talent demand, followed by Chennai, during the month.
