After touching a fresh all-time low against the US dollar on Thursday, the rupee jumped 27 paise to end at 68.46.
The NSE Nifty ended at 3,065, down 170 points. The market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,588 stocks traded, 1,733 declined, 778 advanced and the rest were unchanged on Wednesday.
The broader NSE Nifty ended at 10,888, a gain of 0.77 per cent or 83 points, after shuttling between 10,900.35 and 10,844.85.
The broader NSE Nifty, after shuttling between 10,600.25 and 10,491.45 points, ended the last session of Samvat 2074 with a rise of 6 points, or 0.06 per cent, to end at 10,530.
The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 108 points at 20,836 and touched a high of 20,873 in early deals. The index slipped into negative zone soon, and exhibited a weak trend for the rest of the trading day.
All the sectoral indices, too, rallied sharply today. The BSE IT index zoomed over 6% (261 points) to 4582. The BSE Bankex, Power, PSU and TECk indices moved up 3-5% each today.
At first glance, the numbers show a mixed trend.

Sun Pharma was the biggest loser among Sensex components, plunging 3.94 per cent, followed by Tata Steel falling 3.12 per cent.

The Sensex has dropped below the 10,700-mark, and is now at the day's low at 10,686 - down 49 points.
Volatility can be the order of the day

In the Sensex kitty, ITC turned star performer by surging 2.45 per cent, followed by NTPC rising 2.19 per cent.

In the Sensex kitty on Wednesday, Tata Motors emerged as the top loser falling 3.01 per cent, followed by Vedanta shedding 2.92 per cent. Other laggards include HUL, Kotak Bank, NTPC, Infosys, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Hero MotoCorp, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, HDFC, IndusInd Bank and PowerGrid, falling up to 1.77 per cent.
The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 18 points at 11,104. Fresh buying in the early deals saw the index rally to a high of 11,140
Top losers in the Sensex pack include Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Asian Paints, RIL, Coal India, HDFC Bank, HDFC, TCS, ONGC and M&M, falling up to 3.09 per cent.
Sun Pharma stole the show in the Sensex pack, spurting 3.91 per cent, followed by M&M at 2.87 per cent.
NSE Nifty, after shuttling between 10,809.60 and 10,725.90, finished 30.95 points, or 0.29 per cent lower at 10,741.10.
The NSE Nifty ended 89.40 points, or 0.83 per cent, lower at 10,710.45.
The Indian men's team secured a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Badminton Asia Team Championships after a hard-fought 3-2 win against Malaysia in the quarter-finals at the Gachibowli indoor stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.
The Sensex has gained 25 points to hit an all-time high of 7,925.
The Sensex swung over 660 points both ways on alternate bouts of selling and buying before closing the day higher by 97.39 points, or 0.28 per cent.
In line with Sensex, the broader indices also saw hefty losses. Large cap index tumbled 0.79 per cent, midcap 0.87 per cent and smallcap 0.57 per cent.
The 30-share Sensex stayed in the green for the better part of the session and hit the day's high of 38,297.70 as buying pace gathered momentum towards the fag-end.
Infosys was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rising 2.36 per cent, followed by HDFC Bank up 1.39 per cent.
Strong gains in metal, energy, auto and power shares lifted the key indices to new highs.
The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 14 points at 7,819, and zoomed to a high of 7,902 in early deals.
ICICI Bank was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, surging 4.64 per cent, followed by Axis Bank at 3.86 per cent and SBI 2.53 per cent.
Among Sensex constituents, HCL Tech suffered the most by diving 2.26 per cent, followed by HDFC shedding 2.10 per cent.
Among the Sensex losers, Yes Bank tumbled 5.46 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finance 5.40, ICICI Bank 3.82 per cent, IndusInd Bank 3.10 per cent and HeromotoCorp 2.55 per cent.
The NSE Nifty after shuttling between 10,397.60 and 10,279.35 points, ended 47 points, or 0.45 per cent lower at 10,301.05.
The broader NSE Nifty scaled a high of 10,856.55 before closing up by 55.90 points, or 0.52 per cent
The BSE Sensex spurted 130.00 points to end at 35,980.93, while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 30.35 points to 10,802.15.
