'Pollution levels in Indian cities progressively getting worse'

A study pointing that the pollution levels in New Delhi is worse than that of Beijing may have been quoting the data from the worst period of the year but the air quality in Indian cities is progressively getting worse, United Nations climate change chief Rajendra Pachauri said on Tuesday.

Rajendra Pachauri, head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United Nations said the developing countries, including India and China, are unwilling to sign up a new global climate change pact to replace the Kyoto protocol in 2012 as the rich world has failed to set a clear example on cutting carbon emissions. He said rich countrieslike the US, had failed to take the action needed to convince developing nations to sign a deal to help stabilise emissions.

In both India and China, there is now a serious debate. "In India I can see it for sure because the prime minister is quite concerned about this issue.
