A study pointing that the pollution levels in New Delhi is worse than that of Beijing may have been quoting the data from the worst period of the year but the air quality in Indian cities is progressively getting worse, United Nations climate change chief Rajendra Pachauri said on Tuesday.

Pachauri was responding to queries on Monday about how he intended to implement several recommendations made by the InterAcademy Council, which conducted a review of the working of the IPCC following widespread criticism stemming from erroneous conclusions in its fourth report.
"There is growing worldwide concern that economic slowdown could lead to a parallel slowdown in environmental progress, with governments less willing to advocate hard steps essential for reducing greenhouse emission," Pachauri, head of the United Nation's Nobel Prize-winning scientific panel said, in an article published in the Guardian.

Attacking the so-called 'climategate' affair as a bid to undermine the capability of his organisation, Rajendra Pachauri said at the opening ceremony that those who had hacked into the e-mails of top climate scientists were out to discredit the scientific assessment made of threats to the climate.

He said rich countrieslike the US, had failed to take the action needed to convince developing nations to sign a deal to help stabilise emissions.
India and China need to chart a different path to develop low carbon economies to combat global warming, Chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Rajendra Pachauri said. In both India and China, there is now a serious debate. "In India I can see it for sure because the prime minister is quite concerned about this issue. He set up the advisory council on climate change," he said.
