Injuries sustained by top players in this week's Saudi PSA World Open has taken a toll on the draw for next week's Punj Lloyd PSA Masters, the 10th and final PSA Super Series squash event of the year, to be held here from December 14-19.
It was a disappointing outing for Indian players in the Punj Lloyd PSA Masters 2010 as all lost their opening round matches and bowed out of the squash event at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, in Delhi, on Tuesday. Much was expected of wild card entrant Harinder Pal Sandhu, qualifiers Sandeep Jangra and Siddharth Suchde but the trio failed to impress in a star-studded field.
India's top-ranked female player Dipika Pallikal kept the tri-colour fluttering by progressing into the quarter-finals of the women's singles squash event, even as compatriots Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa bowed out at the Punj Lloyd PSA and WISPA Masters in New Delhi.
Local favourite Saurav Ghosal survived an early challenge before edging past English qualifier Adrian Weller in straight games in the opening round of the Punj Lloyd PSA Masters squash tournament in Delhi on Wednesday. World No 22 Ghosal defeated Weller 11-7, 12-10, 11-6 in 45 minutes to move into the pre-quarter-finals of the US $1,92,5000 event at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
Come December, the top 32 squash players from across the world will travel to Mumbai to play in the inaugural Punj Lloyd PSA Masters 2009.
Fifth seed Peter Barker of England upset top seed Ramy Ashour of Egypt 11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 11-1 in 45 minutes in the quarter-finals of the Punj Lloyd PSA Masters 2011 at Siri Fort Sports Complex in Delhi on Friday. In another upset of the day, sixth seed Mohamed El Shorbagy stunned second seed Karim Darwish 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3 in 60 minutes, in the all Egyptian quarter-final.
Ramy Ashour of Egypt put up an assured performance to tame England's Nick Matthew and win the Punj Lloyd PSA Masters squash tournament at the Bombay Gymkhana, in Mumbai, on Thursday. In a final that was both entertaining and enthralling, the fourth seeded Ashour prevailed 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9.
Egypt's Ramy Ashour beat compatriot Amr Shabana 11-9, 13-15, 11-8, 11-2 on Wednesday to move into the final of the $152, 000 Punj Lloyd PSA Masters squash tournament. The Egyptian will face England's Nick Matthew in the final. The English fourth seed got the better of compatriot Peter Barker 13-11, 11-6, 11-5 in the second semi-final.
It will be an all-Egyptian affair in the semi-final of the Punj Lloyd PSA Masters 2009, as second seed Amr Shabana and compatriot Ramy Ashour won their respective quarter-final matches at the Bombay Gymkhana on Tuesday.
Unheralded Englishman Daryl Selby caused the biggest upset of the $152, 000 Punj Lloyd PSA Masters squash tournament on Sunday when he shocked top seed Gregory Gaultier of France in the opening round.
