The govt is not keen to fill the vacancies as it will be replaced by the CCI. Officials say the government is not keen to fill the vacancies as the body will be replaced by the CCI. However, even after CCI is notified, the MRTPC will function for two more years to clear the cases it is hanling at present. The MRTPC is still taking fresh cases.

Puzzled by the way banks levy differing 'floating interest rates' from new and existing customers, the fair trade practices body MRTPC has initiated a probe into how lending institutions arrive at these rates.Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission feels that the practice of banks using low interest rates to woo new customers while forcing the old ones to pay higher rates was discriminatory and restrictive under the MRTP Act.

India's anti-trust body CCI, which would ultimately replace MRTPC, is an independent body responsible for investigating mergers, market shares and conditions and the regulation of firms. Section 66 of the Competition Act deals with repealing and dissolution of the MRTPC Act, 1969. With the operationalisation of CCI, MRTPC was supposed to stop entertaining new cases and was to deal with pending cases for two years before being completely dissolved.

Telecom major Bharti Group Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Bharti Mittal denied any attempt on forming a cartel with other telecom players to distort competition.
