Iran has once again blamed Pakistan for Sunday's terror attack on the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, in which 42 people were killed, saying there is specific information that the perpetrators were hiding inside Pakistan. The United States may launch an attack on Iran in 2010 from its military bases in Afghanistan, says Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki, adding that such a move would disrupt the stability of the entire region.
Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna during his two-day visit to India. Mottaki, who has frequently been in the news for defending Iran's controversial nuclear agenda, told a TV channel during an interview, "Leaders of India are looking for a new chapter of co-operation and relation with Iran and that is a constructive signal."
Iran says it is confident that the proposed "peace pipeline" project to transfer natural gas from the rich Iranian fields to Pakistan and India will be constructed once the negotiations between New Delhi and Islamabad are concluded.
This will be India's first high-level political contact with the new Iranian government.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki will undertake a three-day visit to New Delhi next week during which issues related to Iran's controversial nuclear programme and the proposed tri-nation gas pipeline are expected to dominate.
Asked whether Senator Barack Obama would be better for Iran since he has called for a withdrawal from Iraq, Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki said whosoever becomes President will have to bring about fundamental changes in US policy regarding its relations with different parts of the world, including the Middle East.
There are nearly 450 Indians in Iran who would like to avail of dual citizenship.
Natwar to consolidate partnership with Iran
The prime minister said Iran needs time to come out with its detailed response as it had "several elements" in its administration.
External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh arrived in Tehran on a 3-day visit on Friday, marking New Delhi's first high-level political contact with Iran's new government.
He said: "India is indeed a big and great country, which will conduct its relations with other countries based on its national interest."
