The Army has foiled an attempt to push in arms and ammunition by Pakistan from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir and recovered a cache, including four AK 74 rifles.
"Heavy casualty is expected on the terrorist side. However, the operation is still in progress as intermittent exchange of firing is going on," a defence spokesman said.
Two army jawans have been killed while foiling an infiltration bid by terrorists from across the border in Keran sector of North Kashmir's Kupwara district, a defence spokesman said on Monday. Another gunbattle is on in Pulwama district of South Kashmir
The firing assault comes in retaliation to ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops in the Keran sector earlier in the day.
Lance Naik Mohammed Naseer, 35-year-old from border district of Poonch in J&K, was hit during the firing.
Two militants and a soldier were killed on Sunday in a gun battle during infiltration bids by ultras at Keran and Tangdhar sectors along the Line of Control in Kashmir while an army officer lost his life in a mishap during a search operation.
A 67-year-old resident, Mangat Ram and a BSF jawan was injured in the firing.
This is the first time the government sources have confirmed that artillery fire was indeed used by the Army to launch a massive assault against Pakistan.

"Since the Hyderpora attack of June 24, there have been a series of successful operations both on LoC and in the hinterland area. We have killed 28 terrorists in this period, out of which 18 were eliminated on the LoC and 10 in the hinterland," GOC of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh told reporters in Srinagar.
The repeated skirmishes saw over 4,000 villagers from near borders to government camps at safer places in the district.
