Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia, who retires this month, has recommended the name of senior most Supreme Court judge Justice Altamas Kabir as his successor, setting in motion the process of change of guard in the apex court.
Justice Altamas Kabir, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, was on Saturday sworn in as the 39th Chief Justice of India by President Pranab Mukherjee.
Outgoing Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir on Thursday dismissed criticism against the Supreme Court judgement on the Mumbai dance bar issue saying if the constitutional rights of the people have been affected it was duty of the judiciary to protect them.
Justice Altamas Kabir, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, was on Thursday appointed as the next Chief Justice of India.
While Justice Kabir pronounced his verdict in favour of the government, saying the Centre's plea was maintainable, Justice Nijjar refused to hear the application, saying it is not maintainable.
Holding that corruption has become a "way of life", senior Supreme Court judge Altamas Kabir has said "sensitivity" and values in governance are required to curb the menace. "Why are we still floundering with our values? Why is it that the people are still helpless? The answer is simple, now it (corruption) has become a way of life... it has been accepted as a way of life," Justice Kabir said.
Modifying its December 2012 ruling, the Supreme Court today dissolved the Medical Council of India's notification to hold a single entrance test for medical, dental and post graduate medical programmes in the country.
