A court in Madurai, India, has sentenced nine police officers to death for the custodial deaths of a father and son in Sathankulam, Tamil Nadu, in 2020. The victims, P Jayaraj and J Bennix, were killed after being arrested for violating COVID-19 lockdown rules.
A few weeks ago Palthurai was admitted to the jail hospital after he tested positive for COVID-19. Earlier on July 28, head constable Murugan and constable Muthuraj, two accused in the case had also tested positive for COVID-19.
P Jayaraj and his son Fennix, arrested for 'violating' lockdown norms over business hours of their cellphone shop, died at a hospital in Kovilpatti on June 23.
