The Indian drug industry's dream of coming out with an own new chemical entity or an originally researched new drug has received a big boost. Balaglitazone, the diabetic drug molecule being developed by Dr Reddy's Laboratories, has showed encouraging results in the final lap of human clinical trials.
Stringent regulatory norms and the financial impact of the global credit crisis on some research companies may hurt half a dozen molecules of Indian companies, such as Glenmark, Nicholas Piramal and Ranbaxy Laboratories, that are close to launch, experts and analysts said.
Dr Reddy's Laboratories hopes to become a true drug discovery company in the near future, said chairman K Anji Reddy and chief executive officer GV Prasad at the 24th annual general body meeting in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
