The Tirunelveli principal sessions court here on Thursday sentenced two persons to death and another to three years rigorous imprisonment in connection with the murder of former Tamil Nadu law minister Aladi Aruna and his close associate in December 2004.
Poongothai first successfully contested from this constituency in 2006, two years after her father Aruna, a Law Minister in the 1996-2001 DMK government, was killed allegedly by his rivals in his native place. When he was killed, Aladi Aruna was not with the DMK.
The Tirunelveli principal sessions court on Wednesday convicted three persons for the murder of former Dravida Munnetra K Minister Aladi Aruna and his close associate in 2004 and acquitted six others. Pronouncing the verdict, Judge K Bhaskaran found the accused Veldurai, Balamurugan and Azhagar guilty and acquitted S A Raja, an educationist and five others on the ground that charges were not proved against them.
Aruna and his friend, who is a professor at a college which the former minister was managing, were returning after their morning walk when unidentified assailants accosted them near a petrol bunk and hacked them to death.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President M K Stalin will try his luck once again from Kolathur constituency in Chennai in the April 6 Tamil Nadu assembly elections while his son Udhayanidhi will make his electoral debut by contesting from the Chepauk-Triplicane segment in the metropolis.
