At a time when tension was already high among the North Eastern people in different parts of the country and rumours were triggering their exodus, a statement by the All India Assam Students Union leader in Guwahati about the death of an Assamese passenger in Andhra Pradesh has further heightened the tension.
Four people were killed when the police fired at a group of protesting farmers and fishermen at Sompeta in Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.Two more farmers were injured in the firing and are reportedly fighting for their lives. The protestors had started pelting stones at the policemen, who had retaliated by indiscriminate lathi charge.The police then opened fire on a massive crowd that was opposing the state government's proposal to set up a thermal plant.
