Finnish handset maker Nokia became the centre of a tax scandal as a team of Indian Income-Tax officials on Tuesday raided its factory near Chennai on charges of alleged tax evasion worth Rs 3,000 crore (30 billion).
"Nokia plans to reduce up to 10,000 positions globally by the end of 2013. Nokia is beginning the process of engaging with employee representatives in accordance with country-specific legal requirements," it said in a statement.
The financial structure of the agreement includes undisclosed one-time payment and on-going payments, all from RIM to Nokia
Authorities have put forward a tax demand of Rs 2,080 crore.
Consumers, who own the chargers manufactured by a third-party supplier, are recommended to exchange these chargers for free, the company said.
India is crucial for Nokia's attempt to hold on to global market share.
Nokia on Tuesday issued a warning over its mobile BL-5C batteries manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co Ltd of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006, saying that the batteries may overheat while charging.
Nokia said that it will be informing all stakeholders including the Labour Commissioner of the suspension.
Nokia has also included 'Slam' feature in Asha 205. Slam allows consumers to share multimedia content like photos, music and video with nearby friends almost instantly.
Leading mobile handset maker Nokia has registered nearly 15 per cent decline in revenue at Rs 14,100 crore (Rs 141 billion) in 2009-10 over Rs 16,567 crore (Rs 165.67 billion) in the previous fiscal mainly due to low prices and fierce competition from smaller players.
Nokia has tied up with Citibank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Standard Chartered, HSBC, ICICI Bank and SBI Cards for the EMI scheme and the offer will be available to consumers with credit cards from any of these banks.
The application has been launched for its Lumia series of phones and other smartphones.
Although the company did not divulge the exact price but said it will be priced below Rs 11,000.
