Some new sectors in which the commerce ministry has proposed to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) are credit information companies and commodity exchanges. The ministry is in favour of allowing up to 49 per cent FDI proposed in both these sectors. In proposing to open up the commodity sector, the ministry has said that FII investment be limited to 24 per cent, with a condition that a foreign investor cannot hold more than 10 per cent equity in the investing companies
Commodity exchanges are all restructuring their boards of directors, after the recently issued guidelines of the Forward Markets Commission.
The Forwards Markets Commission has been working on preventing any possible conflict of interest a promoter of a commodity exchange may have between their roles of running the exchange and other businesses such as broking and trading. "So far, we had two rounds of meeting in this regard. We are resolving the issues and guidelines would be finalised by the end of October," said FMC Chairman B C Khatua.
The Union ministry of consumer affairs has given the finishing touches to the policy framework to allow foreign direct investment and foreign institutional investment in India's national commodity exchanges.
