While the COVID-19 pandemic has completely halted production and new orders, exporters say that payments have also been delayed for the shipments sent before the lockdown. Exporters say some customers are not taking delivery of the shipments because they have shut shop. Ready-made garment players had been hoping for a revival in demand in China but with the virus spreading to Europe, the US and other major markets, there are no orders coming from the major retailers.
Large retailers are allegedly importing apparel made of Chinese fabric from Bangladesh at nil duty, under our free trade agreement with the latter country. However, the same agreement does not permit duty-free export from here.
"Everything we consume, we have to consume responsibly," the textile minister said at Lakme Fashion Week.
In a move that could improve the weakening sentiment in the Indian textile industry, the government is set to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) by the end of the current calendar year.
MAG was constituted by Department of Electronics and IT in February 2014.
There are also talks of branded garments being put under the luxury tax slab, which could be higher than 18 per cent.
Buoyed by the success of e-commerce players like Jabongand Myntra, textile companies like Arvind Ltd, TT Ltd and Creative Lifestyles, among others are exploring the online market through their own e-commerce platforms.
