Enjoying the backing of the regulator, Gill has identified the core problems, ring-fenced the banks from "influencers" and is in the process of building a new team. Now, he needs to play a Vikram Pandit for YES Bank, says Tamal Bandyopadhyay.
Gill, who studied at Modern School and Hindu College in Delhi, joined Deutsche Bank in 1991 and became its India CEO in 2012.

An infusion of capital would come as a much-needed relief for the bank, with its capital adequacy ratio barely above the regulatory requirements, as of June disclosures.
For the near term, Gill will have to improve relations with the Reserve Bank of India, which have been strained in recent times. He will also need to strengthen the bank's asset quality and improve governance standards and internal processes.
Kapoor and his associate entities owned 10.6 per cent in the bank at the end of June 2019.
Sources close to the bank said non-executive and non-independent director Ajai kumar had been recommended for the interim CEO role.
The regulatory actions, undertaken by the RBI and the government, came hours after finance ministry sources confirmed that SBI was directed to bail out the troubled lender. For the next month, Yes Bank will led by the RBI-appointed administrator Prashant Kumar, an ex-chief financial officer of SBI.
Uttam Prakash Agarwal alleged that Citax and Braich offers were incomplete and did not include firm commitment as to the price, size, timings, confirmation from the banks about availability of the funds.
YES Bank said that it has not paid any bonus to Kapoor for FY17 and FY18. He drew a salary of Rs 6.48 crore for the ten months he served as MD & CEO, before his tenure ended in January.
