The rich will have to pay more for the use of water as the government on Thursday indicated that it has plans to impose varying rates for different sections of consumers. Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy told Rajya Sabha that the government was not thinking of increasing the price of water for poorer sections, but needed to charge the affluent to cover the operation and maintenance expenses.
"We are working on using land resources and PPP model for having more residential as well as office accommodation in the future," Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said on Tuesday while laying the foundation stone of general pool office complex in New Delhi. Comparing the VIPs' penchant for pet accommodation and dream houses to road rage in the city, Reddy said the ministry is facing 'house rage' in the capital.
"Real estate is facing a slowdown. So we should make an arrangement for giving loans at 6.5 per cent interest for houses in the below Rs 5 lakh (Rs 500,000) category to the poor," Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy said. He suggested an extension of housing loan at the rate of 7.5 per cent presently available for flats up to Rs 20 lakh to those priced at Rs 30 lakh in the cities. "The revival of real estate is key for generating employment," he said.
