GST officers can now launch prosecution against offenders in cases where the amount of evasion or misuse of input tax credit is more than Rs 5 crore, the finance ministry has said. However, this monetary threshold will not be applicable in the case of habitual evaders or in cases where arrests have been made at the time of investigation. "One of the important considerations for deciding whether prosecution should be launched is the availability of adequate evidence," the GST investigation wing under the finance ministry said, while issuing instructions for launching prosecution.

ITC Hotels Ltd has posted a net profit of Rs 29.40 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2002 as compared to a net loss of Rs 36.50 million in the quarter ended December 31, 2001.
ITC, the cigarettes-to-hotels conglomerate, has recorded a 26 per cent increase in net profit at Rs 1,009 crore in the quarter ended September 30, from Rs 802 crore in the same period last year, led by revenue growth in almost all its businesses, except hotels. Net income grew 18 per cent to Rs 4,345 crore, up from Rs 3,682 crore in the same quarter last year.

Even as banks and finance companies are reporting record-high earnings, their weighting in the benchmark National Stock Exchange Nifty50 Index has seen a downward trajectory.
