Spanish veteran Rafael Nadal had to draw on all his experience to survive Daniil Medvedev's epic fightback and clinch his fourth US title and 19th Grand Slam overall.
19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu made headlines a day earlier after shocking Serena Williams to win her first Grand Slam crown.
Andreescu had failed to qualify for the tournament last year and ended 2018 with a year-end ranking of 178.
Nadal, 33, became the second oldest US Open champion in the professional era behind Australian Ken Rosewall, who was 35 when he won it in 1970.
