The sails of the iconic Sydney Opera House were lit up over the weekend with messages of support for the firefighters currently battling at least 136 fires in New South Wales alone.

The projections began at 8.30 pm on Saturday and were a tribute to the firefighters and communities who have suffered through the current crisis.

Fire crews have been working tirelessly since the bushfire season began back in October.

Thousands of homes have already been destroyed and 27 people have been killed, but there are fears those numbers will rise as the season could last until March.

Over seven million hectares of land have burned in the fires.
