The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) announced July 7 the opening of a center in Mumbai, the fourth in India, to conduct its qualifying examination for nurses.
The center will be open for the November 9 examination later this year, for which applications have to be in before August 10.
The other centers are Bangalore, Cochin and Delhi. CGFNS administers the examination four times a year for Level-1, general nurses educated outside the United States, who wish to practice nursing in the United States. The exams are offered at over 40 locations worldwide in March, July, September and November.
The center number for Mumbai is 853.
Forty US states require that foreign-educated nurses pass the CGFNS Qualifying Exam before they will be authorized to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination (the US national licensure examination for registered nurses).
CGFNS is a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia with nearly 30 years of experience in certifying the credentials of over 500,000
Meanwhile, Indian organizations have approached the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) based in Chicago to establish a center in India for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
Currently the NCSBN is conducts the examination in only three foreign cities: Seoul, London and Hong Kong. Passing the NCLEX will help nurses practice in the US once they have immigrated to the US.
