Mayawati hails UP cops for cracking down on SP protests

March 10, 2011 19:52 IST

Praising the Uttar Pradesh police for sternly handling the Samajwadi Party's anti-government street demonstrations across the state, Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday issued a fresh warning to all opposition parties to refrain from indulging in such agitations.

"Let the Samajwadi Party as well as other opposition parties be warned that they would be severely dealt with in case they choose to disrupt law and order in this state," Mayawati declared at a press conference.

Terming the three-day long agitation that concluded on Wednesday as an attempt by the Samajwadi Party to spread jungle-raj (misrule) across the state, the chief minister said, "I am extremely happy with all my officials who were responsible for thwarting the bid of Samajwadi Party goons to disturb the peace and tranquility in the state."

She went on to add, "Let it be known loud and clear that I am the last one to tolerate any nonsense and will never allow anyone to take the law into their own hands."

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's son and Member of Parliament Akhilesh Yadav had been arrested as soon as he reached Lucknow from Delhi on Wednesday.

Later, while talking to mediapersons, Yadav said, "The chief minister's assertion reflects her dictatorial approach, but I wish to make it clear to her that her warnings to repeat her oppressive methods will not deter us from raising our voice against her undemocratic and corrupt ways."
