Govt may table Liberhan report in winter session

August 12, 2009 03:10 IST

In a move which could create ripples, the government may table the Liberhan Commission report along with the Action Taken Report in the winter session of parliament beginning around November 9.

The report which deals with the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 has been kept under wraps by the government and in a rare instance, has not been leaked. The report was given to the government on June 30, 2009, 16 years after the commission was originally set up.

It was originally supposed to be presented to the then government in 1993 but 48 extensions and Rs 8 crores later, the nation will finally get to know what Justice Liberhan was upto for all these years, more important than that would be the Action Taken Report given by the government on those findings, since the main accused in the demolition of the Babri Masjid, L K Advani is the leader of the opposition while his colleagues like Murli Manohar Joshi and others occupy front row of the opposition in Parliament.

A senior minister said that while the contents of the report would serve the purpose of putting the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its sister organizations on the defensive, it would also help the government cause to divert attention from some unhappy issues confronting the United Progressive Alliance.

With drought almost official now and price rise already becoming a headache for the government, it is expected that by October-November

prices would peak as the fallout of the drought would be visible by then. The report would to some extent divert attention from that issue as the BJP is not expected to take the report with any amount of calm. Secondly, by then the government is also expected to be fully in the midst of its disinvestment process which is expected to begin shortly and this would attract the required amount of flak from the Left parties who are no longer in the government to oppose it but are expected to raise their voice nevertheless when the government begins to disinvest its public sector to mop up funds.

It is ironic that the report on the demolition of the Babri Masjid which became a key event in Indian politics and changed the fortunes of many political parties has been allowed to hang fire for so long and its contents are set to become public at a time when the BJP and its leadership are once groping for an identity and stand at a cross roads unsure of which direction to take.

As far as the Congress is concerned, its ally Laloo Yadav in a moment of anger during the recent elections accused the Congress of also being responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid. The Muslims and many other sections in the country also believed this to be true, but over the last 17 years the party has once again built its trust deficit with the Muslim community and has moved to a new leadership which has apologized for the sins of the past.
