With apprehensions of an increase in infiltration by terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir this summer, the army has gone for deployment of intelligence personnel along with regular troops and modern devices to counter it.

"The security set-up along Line of Control has been strengthened. For the first time intelligence persons and units have been deployed along the LoC with Pakistan to collect advance and target oriented inputs on infiltration," senior security officials told PTI.

Army chief General Deepak Kapoor had recently told media persons in New Delhi after meeting Union Home Minister P Chidambaram that infiltration had increased in this year. The Union Home Ministry has put figures of infiltration at 60 this year so far.

Tactical deployment of forces has been done along the LoC to check terrorists from crossing over, officials said.

The forces have also taken other steps such as electrification of three-tiered border fencing and installation of heat sensing electronic gadgets and night vision devices (NVDs).

"As another tier of security inside the LoC, police have set-up border posts for generating local intelligence to foil infiltration bids," they said.

Security officials said infiltration also increased during 2009. "During 2008, gross infiltration (attempts) was estimated at 342 and net infiltration was 57 (those who succeeded), whereas in the year 2009, the gross infiltration was estimated at 485 and net infiltration was 113."

As per police figures, 535 infiltration attempts were made in 2007, while 2006 reported 573 such attempts along LoC and IB in Jammu and Kashmir.

The highest number 1373 infiltration bids took place in 2003 followed by 537 in 2004 and 597 in 2005, according to figures of the police.

An estimated 57 militants crossed over to this side in 2008 along the LoC, it was 311 militants in 2007 and 317 in 2006, police said.
