Asserting that the Hindutva ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party could be 'detrimental' for the unity and integrity of the country, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday endorsed Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh's views that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was involved in Mahatma Gandhi's assassination.

"I approached Singh and complimented him for whatever he has said on the RSS,"  CPI-M general secretary and United Progressive Alliance's coordination committee's convenor Harkishan Singh Surjeet told reporters in Delhi.

"He has taken numerous steps to keep intact the secular character of the country," Surjeet said, adding that the previous National Democratic Alliance government saffronised education by distorting history.

"Singh took correct steps to keep such detrimental changes in history books to their factual positions," he said.

Surjeet said that Singh had full backing of the CPI-M for his stand to expose the RSS.

On the hue and cry raised by the opposition at the central level on the issue of tainted ministers, he said, "Some of these accusations against certain ministers are baseless."

He, however, was quick to add: "Those found guilty should be punished."

Surjeet said that the UPA government would complete its full term at the Centre till the Left was there among the constituents.

"The CPI-M is satisfied with the functioning of the Manmohan Singh government," he added.

"Till the role of Left is there in the UPA government nobody could engineer fall of the government," he claimed.

He said that all the constituents of the UPA were enjoying freedom and power.

He said that the CPI-M was not power hungry but was in favour of a strong government at the central level.

Surjeet in a veiled threat, however, said, "If the Left feels that a particular government can do no justice with the masses, it prefers in pulling down that government."

"We have played significant roles in the formation and pulling of government at the central level," he said.

He said that religion had no relation with politics and there was a need to protect the secular character of the country.

Taking a dig at the BJP, he said that "the BJP's ideology is against the basic structure of the country."

The people of the country had outrightly rejected the BJP, he said adding that the Left had played a significant role in bringing parties opposed to the BJP on one platform.
