VVIPS, please don't come to Mumbai

December 01, 2008

The electronic traffic monitor informs motorists about a VVIP visit. On the best of days Mumbai's traffic is a nightmare, so one can imagine what a VVIP visit entails on the first Monday after the terrorist attack.

What good do such visits do? Why do these people from the political class show up? Everyone knows it is nothing more than for a photo-op -- for which an already beleaguered city administration has to put up additional resources just to ensure the smooth passage of these politicos.

Why do politicians waste the tax-payer's money on such visits? Shouldn't the state machinery tackle the emergency rather than these VIPs coming in? Why do they have to add to people's trauma?

Write and discuss what you think of such futile visits, so that the political class get the message -- loud and clear.
