The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to gangster Jayendra Vishnu Thakur alias 'Bhai Thakur' lodged in jail for last seven years in a TADA case.

A bench comprising Justice B P Singh and Justice H S Bedi released Thakur on regular bail who is accused of conspiring to murder a builder Suresh Dube over a property dispute at Nallasopara Railway Station on October 9, 1989.

Thakur had moved the Special Leave Petition in 2005 aggrieved by the TADA court's order in Pune rejecting his bail application on November that year. Senior advocate U R Lalit and Manoj Goel submitted that Thakur should be granted bail as the Apex Court had on April 19, 2006 directed the TADA court to proceed with the trial on day-to-day basis and to conclude it within a period of six months which the prosecution failed to do.

The complaint in the murder case was registered by the brothers of the deceased in which Thakur's name did not figure.

His name appeared for the first time in the second complaint lodged by them after an interval of two and a half years, said the SLP. The Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act was invoked against Thakur after the second complaint only, said his counsels.
