Cabinet reviews country's internal security

In the wake of the recent upsurge in terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir and Assam, the country's internal security situation came up for review at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Friday.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Finance Minister P Chidambaram heard the views of the country's top security experts, including Army Chief Gen J J Singh and heads of Intelligence services.

The Army chief recently undertook a visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the situation in the state. A high-level team led by Home Secretary V K Duggal is in Srinagar to review the militancy situation as well as steps taken for the safety of the pilgrims to the holy Amaranath cave shrine.
