After wearing a string of designer gowns to Cannes year after year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan chose the traditional Indian attire for her first appearance at the 65th edition of the film festival.

The Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla sari -- with a heavily embroidered blouse -- was drapped in a unique style, with a front pallu.

In fact, actresses have deviated from the regular sari, and worn it in many different styles over the years. We look at some of them.

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty wore a magnificent Tarun Tahiliani gold sari-gown for her wedding reception back in 2009.

The bridal outfit was designed to flaunt the actress' enviable body.

Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor pours her curves in a delish red sari in Ra.One.

Instead of the traditional way of having the pallu over a shoulder, she ties it around the waist.

Katrina Kaif

With Chikni Chameli, Katrina Kaif brings renewed glory to the attire of Koli fisherwomen with her checkered blouse and a red sari tied in the dhoti form.

Vidya Balan

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra went skimpy with the sari for her first red carpet appearance at the Toronto Film Festival.

She wore a tied blouse with a lehenga-like sari to go with it.

Ameesha Patel

Or, you could wear your sari the Ameesha Patel way.

The actress practically invented and popularised this topic-of-much-controversy style of wearing even the simplest and demure saris.

Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone sashayed down the Cannes red carpet for her first appearance in an ivory-coloured Rohit Bal sari worn the traditional way.

The neat pallu pleats and the tie-up blouse were the highlights of the look.
