Crazy Gopalan fails miserably

The target audience for Dileep's movies are usually kids, who drag their elders to the theatres. Films like Meesamadhavan, CID Moosa and Inspector Garud are homourous lowbrow entertainers. He tried macho roles in films like Runway and The Don as well.

His new Malayalam film Crazy Gopalan -- directed by newcomer Dipu -- is a mixture of his old movies. He tries to find the right mix of his clownish and macho images but the effort is too garish for subdued tastes.

The film starts with an unidentified Kattila Gopalan (Dileep), a village thief, who steals raw materials from construction sites. He dreams of making it big in the city one day.

The film moves on predictable terrain. Gopalan gets a partner Salim Kumar, and the two are falsely accused of robbing a bank. Our man then gets on an avenging spree against the person, who got him involved in the bank robbery.

The USP of this movie is Dileep appearing in different getups. But most of them are just chuckle-inducing wigs.

Debutant Radha Varma plays a beautiful damsel in distress.

We feel sorry for Dileep for the film does not give him an opportunity to do anything new. He seems to be as fake as his wigs. He does not find his footing in comic situations though ably supported by Salim Kumar in the first half and Jagathy Sreekumar in the second.

Manoj K Jayan, playing the typical villain, bumps people off according to his whims and fancies. His stylishness becomes overbearing after a point.

Debutant director Dipu, in an effort to make this Dileep film universally appealing, fails to excite anyone.
