Driven by entry level products, the personal computer market in the country grew by 17 per cent totalling 2.9 million units in the second quarter of 2012, research firm Gartner said on Tuesday.
"The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totalled nearly 2.9 million units in the second quarter of 2012, a 17 per cent increase over the second quarter of 2011," Gartner said.
Gartner expects the growth to continue in the third quarter also owing to festive season and education buying, coupled with some more fulfilment of the Tamil Nadu government order.
"Consumer PC sales grew 24 per cent sequentially, which emphasises the fact that media tablets are not yet cannibalising the PC market in India like in the West.
Consumer growth is being primarily being driven by entry level products," Gartner principal research analyst Vishal Tripathi said in a statement.
He said vendors such as HP, Lenovo, Asus and Samsung registered more than 50 per cent growth in the consumer
Lenovo retained its leadership position as the company's PC shipments grew 86 per cent on the back of increased channel activities, execution of a substantial part of the Tamil Nadu government order and aggressive price points.
HP's PC shipment grew 36 per cent while Dell's shipments declined by 10 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2011, Gartner added.
The top four multinational brands (Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo) contributed 56 per cent of the market while local vendor HCL's PC market share saw a flat growth of 0.2 per cent, Gartner said.
"Consumer buying accounted for 50 per cent of total PC sales in the second quarter of 2012," he added.
Mobile PCs, which grew 54 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2011, helped drive overall market growth, Gartner said.
"White boxes (including parallel import), which accounted for 45 per cent of the overall desktop market, declined 18 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 in comparison to the second quarter of 2011," it added.
