India has 687.71 million mobile subscribers

The country added a whopping 52.21 million mobile users during the quarter ended September 30, 2010, taking the wireless subscriber base to 687.71 million.

The wireless (GSM and CDMA) user base grew by 8.21 per cent during the July-September quarter of 2010 to 687.71 million from 635.51 million in the preceding quarter, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said in a statement.

The total telecom subscriber base (wireline and wireless) touched 723.28 million for the quarter ended September 2010 from 671.69 million in the quarter ended June 2010, an increase of 7.68 per cent.

The overall tele-density (number of telephones per 100 people) for the reported quarter reached 60.99, TRAI said.

However, the all-India blended Average Revenue Per User (Arpu) per month for the GSM segment (full mobility) decreased by 10.16 per cent to Rs 110 in September from Rs 122 in June, while the Arpu for the CDMA segment during the same period dipped 1.34 per cent to Rs 73 from Rs 74.

Subscriber base of wireline service declined from 36.18 million at the end of June, 2010, to 35.57 million on September 30, 2010, taking the wireline tele-density to 3.00.

During the July-September quarter, subscription in urban areas increased to 487.07 million, while rural subscription grew to 236.21 million, taking the tele-density in these areas to 137.25 and 28.42, respectively.

The total Internet subscriber base reached 17.90 million for the September quarter from 16.72 million in the previous quarter, registering an increase of about 7.02 per cent.

Share of broadband subscription in total Internet subscription increased to 57.6 per cent in July-September with 10.30 million subscribers, it said.
