The direct tax collections surged by 22 per cent to Rs 63,026 crore (Rs 630.26 billion) till December 22, mainly on the back of industrial upturn and better corporate results.
With collections crossing the Rs 63,000 crore (Rs 630 billion) mark, the government has been able to attain 65.09 per cent of the budget target of Rs 95,569 crore (Rs 955.69 billion) for 2003-04, finance ministry officials told PTI in New Delhi on Monday.
Last fiscal, the Centre was able to collect Rs 51,647 crore (Rs 516.47 billion) till December 22.
Corporation tax mop up was at Rs 37,091 crore (Rs 370.91 billion), which was up by 29.6 per cent from previous year's level, the officials said, adding this is 72 per cent of the targeted Rs 51,499 crore (Rs 514.99 billion) in corporation tax for this fiscal.
Last fiscal, the corporation tax collection was Rs 28,614 crore (Rs 286.14 billion) till December 22.
Income tax collection was up by 12.6 per cent to Rs 25,935 crore (Rs 259.35 billion) till December 22, which is 58.8 per cent of the budget target of Rs 44,070 crore (Rs 440.70 billion), they said.
The collection was slightly better than Rs 23,033 crore (Rs 230.33 billion) attained till December 22 last fiscal.
