The index on Tuesday opened above the 5,800-levels with a positive gap of 40 points at 5,824.
The markets turned volatile in early deals, with the index slipping from higher levels to touch an intra-day low of 5,744.
After moving in a range-bound mode till late morning deals, the index rebounded into the green to remain firm thereafter. The index breached the 5,900-levels towards the closing hours as unprecedented buying across-the-board saw it spurt to an intra-day high of 5,918.
The Sensex finally closed with a huge gain of 121 points at 5,905. The Nifty ended 2.46% higher (45 points) at 1,883.
While 23 Sensex stocks advanced, seven declined on Tuesday.
Tech stocks ended with sharp gains. Infosys attracted considerable buying support and mopped up 6.82% gains (Rs 350) to close at Rs 5,490. The stock, which touched an intra-day high of Rs 6,000 during the intra-day deals, clocked a volume of 547,000 on BSE with a turnover of Rs 298 crore (Rs 2.98 billion).
Wirpo also zoomed 10.54% (Rs 153) to finish at Rs 1,605. Satyam gained 5.89% (Rs 19) to close at Rs 334.
Reliance moved up 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 573. ITC and HLL had a mixed outing today, and ended with gains at Rs 1,085 (up Rs 10) and Rs 152 (up Rs 2), respectively.
SBI jumped 2.83% (Rs 18) to Rs 637. While HPCL logged 1.78% gains (Rs 9) to Rs 523, MTNL was up Rs 2 at Rs 142. BHEL, however, ended with a loss of Rs 3 at Rs 649.
Grasim surged 3.24% (Rs 36) to Rs 1,159. While Gujarat Ambuja advanced 3.82% (Rs 12) to Rs 318, L&T rose 2.82% (Rs 17) to Rs 613. ACC moved up 1.27% (Rs 3) to Rs 267.
Hindalco (up Rs 16 or 1.23% to Rs 1,339), HDFC Bank (up Rs 7 or 1.97% to Rs 382), Tata Power (up Rs 7 or 1.67% to Rs 411), Tisco (up Rs 7 or 1.84% to Rs 404), Bharti (up Rs 5 or 3.20% to Rs 174) and Zee (up Rs 3 or 2.23% to Rs 144) ended at higher levels.
While auto majors bounced back from their lows to end with gains, pharma stocks ended on a sluggish note.
Tata Motors gained 2.21% (Rs 11) to Rs 519. Bajaj ended up a per cent (Rs 8) at Rs 891. Hero Honda, however, slipped a per cent (Rs 3) to Rs 501.
Ranbaxy and Dr. Reddy's finished with marginal losses each at Rs 1,040 (down Rs 2) and Rs 960 (down Rs 3), respectively. Cipla, however, added Rs 9 to close at Rs 1,208.
