The Sensex opened 17 points higher at 4,773, and immediately crossed the 4,800-mark to touch a high of 4,802.
The markets, however, displayed negative trends for better part of the trading session on selling pressure in old and new economy stocks.
The index bounced from a low of 4,705 towards the closing bell, and finally finished with a loss of 15 points at 4,741. The Nifty slipped below the 1,500-levels, and ended 12 points lower at 1,494.
While 13 Sensex stocks advanced, 17 declined today. The traded volume and value of the index scrips totalled 3.40 crore and Rs 1,271.03 crore, respectively.
ITC, after a mixed outing, managed to finish in the gainers list at Rs 876 - up Rs 5. Reliance bounced from lows and finished with a gain of Rs 2 at Rs 470. The counter clocked a volume of over 27.46 lakh on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 128 crore. HLL, however, had a firm opening session, but slipped on profit-taking to finish with a loss of Rs 3 at Rs 186.
HPCL lost a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 319. MTNL was down a rupee at Rs 116. SBI, however, added Rs 3 to Rs 491, and the counter clocked a volume of over 28.28 lakh on the BSE with a value of Rs 139 crore. BHEL was up Rs 2 at Rs 432.
Infosys lost ground towards the closing bell, and finished down a per cent (Rs 42) at Rs 4,511. The counter clocked a volume of more than 2.53 lakh on the BSE for Rs 115 crore. While Satyam slumped 5% (Rs 15) to Rs 277, HCL Tech closed down a tad at Rs 199. More than 61.95 lakh Satyam shares changed hands on the BSE with a value of Rs 177 crore.
ACC, which reported a 444% increase in net profit at Rs 27.7 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2003 as against Rs 5.12 crore in SQ02, closed up a tad at Rs 199. Grasim finished with a loss of 3% (Rs 22) at Rs 728. L&T and Gujarat Ambuja were down Rs 2 each at Rs 402 and Rs 223, respectively.
Bajaj lost a per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 857. The auto major reported a 55% increase in net profit at Rs 202.31 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2003 as against Rs 130.82 crore in Q2FY03.
While Hero Honda shed 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 314, Tata Motors gained nearly 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 369.
Ranbaxy ended in the losers list at Rs 989 - down Rs 3. The pharma major reported a 29% increase in net profit at Rs 205.1 crore for the third quarter ended September 30, 2003 as against Rs 159.4 crore in the quarter ended September 30, 2002.
Cipla, which displayed mixed trends during intra-day trades, lost ground to finish down a per cent (Rs 9) at Rs 1,156. Glaxo was down Rs 2 at Rs 455. Dr. Reddy's, however, clocked 2% gains (Rs 21) to close at Rs 1,148.
ICICI Bank advanced 2% (Rs 5) to Rs 217. While Tisco moved up 2% (Rs 7) to Rs 341, Zee gained a per cent (Rs 2) to Rs 140. HDFC, however, dropped nearly 4% (Rs 19) to Rs 512.
Geometric spurted 11% (Rs 41) to Rs 426. Moser Baer and Hexaware gained 4% each to Rs 407 (up Rs 14) and Rs 324 (up Rs 13), respectively. HCL Infosys rose 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 330. Wipro dropped 3% (Rs 43) to Rs 1,269. E-Serve lost 7% (Rs 49) to Rs 665. While Digital and CMC slipped 5% each to Rs 510 (down Rs 27) and Rs 479 (down Rs 23), respectively, i-flex lost 4% (Rs 28) to Rs 677. Mastek was down a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 214.
ONGC and IOC slumped 3% each to Rs 579 (down Rs 19) and Rs 341 (down Rs 10), respectively. IBP and BPCL were down a per cent each at Rs 768 (down Rs 12) and Rs 322 (down Rs 5), respectively.
BoI moved up 3% (Rs 2) to Rs 65. BoB, too, was up 3% (Rs 5) at Rs 183. Canara Bank closed up a rupee at Rs 138. J&K Bank, however, lost 6% (Rs 17) to Rs 263. Oriental Bank and UTI Bank dipped 4% each to Rs 222 (down Rs 10) and Rs 74 (down Rs 3), respectively. Kotak Bank, PNB and Federal Bank were down a per cent each at Rs 337, Rs 191 and Rs 157, respectively.
