'PE firms take fancy for core sector projects'

Private equity investors have taken fancy in infrastructure projects of the country and invested over Rs 13,000 crore (Rs 130 billion) during 2007, according to a report 'Private Equity Impact 2008' released by Venture Intelligence.

The report noted that besides investing in core infrastructure projects, the PE firms are also investing in allied industries that benefit from infrastructure spending like engineering and logistics.

Venture Intelligence is a body that tracks private equity and venture capital investments.

According to the report, the PE firms have invested in infrastructure projects in energy, ports, shipyards, telecom and road sectors.

Power sector has attracted highest investments from PE firms followed by sectors like telecom, ports and roads.

The report said that promoters of infrastructure projects also appreciate investments from PE firms not only to meet their funding requirements but because of the expertise the PE firms possess, which helps them in executing the projects.

The report quoting promoters, who have tapped private equity, said, "that even if public markets provide better valuations, they would prefer partnering with PE investors, thanks to the latter's deeper understanding of the projects and constructive role in realising their intrinsic value."
