The number of unemployed persons in the country was estimated at around 90 lakh (9 million), the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.
As per the last survey conducted in 1999-2000, 60 per cent of the total unemployed, that is around 54 lakh (5.4 million), were educated at secondary level or beyond, according to a reply to a question by Labour Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao tabled in the House.
He said 5 crore (50 million) employment opportunities were to be created during the Tenth Plan period.
