India on Wednesday pitched for greater US investments in the country's manufacturing sector, saying it would not only make quality products available at affordable cost but change lives of millions of Indians for the better.

Alluding to the millions living in unenviable conditions in the country, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said huge investments would help create more jobs, increase income and help people lead a disease-free life.

This, he said, was important as diseases do not recognise physical boundaries and an epidemic here could have an impact in any nation and vice versa.

"With strong communication and transport connectivity around the globe, environmental change or disease outbreak in this part of the world would have an effect on every nation," Sibal said, inaugurating a day-long Indo-US technology summit in integrated design and manufacturing in New Delhi.

"US should invest and set up units in diverse range such as pharma, automobile, biotechnology non-conventional energy and textile, here and contribute its bit in the survival of civilisation," he said.

More and more companies are now willing to partner with Indian companies, under the umbrella agreement with the US, so as to utilise cost advantage, skilled manpower and unlimited market here, the minister said.

"Investments in manufacturing sector would help offer better job opportunities to more and more skilled human resource here. It would help make products available at affordable cost even in the western world," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, US Senator John A Giannetti said: "Partnerships are possible in a wide range of areas from agriculture to remote sensing to nano-technology and communication."
