Gold and silver zoomed to all-time highs in New Delhi on Monday on brisk buying by stockists and jewellers for the upcoming marriage season amid firm global cues.
While gold surged by Rs 235 to a new peak level of Rs 20,335 per ten grams, silver rallied by Rs 1,000 to the record price of Rs 39,900 per kg, a level never seen before.
Jewellers said the trading sentiment turned extremely bullish after gold rose to new record levels in global markets and silver neared a 30-year high on the back of dollar weakness.
Gold in overseas markets, which normally sets the price trend on the domestic front, rose to an all-time high of $1,398.60 an ounce.
Silver, on the other hand, touched $26.99 per ounce, the highest price since March, 1980. On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity surged by Rs 235 each to Rs 20,335 and Rs 20,235 per ten grams, respectively.
Sovereigns also jumped by Rs 150 to a new peak of Rs 16,200 per piece of eight grams. In a similar fashion, silver ready spurted by Rs 1,000 to an all-time high of Rs 39,900 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 1,280 to Rs 39,650 per kg.
Silver coin prices were unchanged at Rs 43,200 for buying and Rs 43,300 for selling of 100 pieces.
