Car sales flat at 1.83% in Feb

Postponing of plans to buy cars expecting excise duty cut in the Budget made domestic sales register almost a flat growth at 1.83 per cent in February this year, though motorcycle sales stuck to their upward growth trend, rising by almost 17 per cent.

According to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers domestic passenger car sales rose by 1.83 per cent in February this year at 63,215 units as compared to 62,073 units in the same month a year ago.

The flat growth of car sales was mainly on account of two of the biggest players, Maruti Udyog and Hyundai Motors, whose sales declined by 3.71 per cent and 7.7 per cent, respectively.

While Maruti clocked 32,259 units (as against 33,505 units last year), Hyundai sold 8,780 units as against 9,518 units in the year-ago period.

Tata Motors, however, managed to increase sales by 12 per cent at 14,201 units as against 12,671 units in February last year.

Cumulative passenger car sales for the April-February period this year increased by 5.5 per cent at 7,71,116 units as against 7,30,455 units in the corresponding a year ago.

In the motorcycle segment, the upward growth trend continued at 16.98 per cent with a total sales of 4,97,280 units as against 4,25,077 units in the same month a year ago.

The country's biggest bike maker Hero Honda continued to lead with 11.46 per cent sales growth at 2,41,232 units as against 2,16,424 units in the same month last year.

Bajaj Auto also managed to clock impressive figures at 1,57,386 units of motorcycles in February this year as against 1,17,947 units in the same month a year ago, up 33.43 per cent.

Overall two wheelers sales in the doetic market jumped 15.57 per cent in Februar at 6,00,877 units compared to 5,19,900 units in the same month last year.

In the commercial vehicles segment, sales during the month surged by 19.16 per cent at 35,049 units as against 29,411 units in the same month a year ago.

The medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HV) segment grew by 17.61 per cent at 21,223 units as against 18,044 units in the same month a year ago. Goods carrier contributed mainly to this segment with 18,368 units as against 15,811 units.

Country's biggest truck maker Tata Motors sold 12,085 units in February as against 10,201 units in the same month a year ago, up 18 per cent.

The light commercial vehicle category also grew by 21.6 per cent at 13,826 units as against 11,367 units last year.
