The markets finally moved up significantly after hovering around the flat line for major part of the day. It was a highly volatile session for the markets; the Sensex crossed the 10,000 mark towards the final hours of trade.
The Sensex finally closed at 9,998 up 113 points.
The NSE Nifty closed at 2,917 up 27 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,009.47, up 118 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,183.64, up 96 points.
About 1582 shares have advanced, 722 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.
Apart from the BSE Bankex all the BSE sectoral indices are in green. BSE metal index is the top performer followed by the auto index.
The major gainers on the indices were Tata Motors, ACC, Cipla, Maruti Udyog and MTNL.

The BSE Metal Index advanced by 2.73% at 7705.12. JSW Steel, Sterlite Ind, Tata Steel, JindalStainless and Hind Zinc witnessed buying interest.
The BSE Auto Index added 2.21% at 4576.52. TVS Motor, Exide Industries, Tata Motors, Cummins and Maruti Udyog closed in positive terrain.
The BSE FMCG Index was up 1.51% at 1819.86. Tata Tea, McDowell, HLL, Dabur India and Nirma closed in green.
The BSE Health Care Index was up by 1.29% at 3090.43. Orchid Chemical, Cadila Health, Cipla, Aurobindo Pharm and Nicholas Piramal were among the major gainers.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index was rose 1% at 4779.39. Chennai Petro, HPCL, Kochi Refin, Reliance and IOC advanced higher.
The BSE IT Index was up by 0.91% at 3469.23. I-Flex Solution, Mphasis BFL, Infosys and Satyam moved up.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 0.79% at 2705.19. Whirlpool, BPL, Titan Industries and Samtel Color inched up.
The BSE Capital Goods Index moved up by 0.57% at 6642.76. Greaves Cotton , Aban LoydChiles, Thermax, Bharat Elec, Praj Industries and KEC Infrastruct closed higher
The BSE Bankex slipped 0.39% at 4369.53. IOB, SBI, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank and Kotak Mahindra closed lower
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 5739.18 crore (Rs 57.39 billion) and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 19549.18 crore (Rs 195.49 billion).
The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2700 crore (Rs 27 billion). Total market wide turnover was at Rs 27,988.36 crore (Rs 279.88 billion) versus Rs 40,789.54 crore (Rs 407.89 billion) on Friday.
Sensex @ 1438 hrs
The markets continue to witness volatile trades on alternate bouts of buying and selling seen in scrips.
At 2:38 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading at 9,917 up 32 points and the Nifty was trading flat near its previous close of 2890.
The Asian markets were trading weak but on the other hand the European markets have opened in the green.
About 1351 shares have advanced, 853 shares declined, and 80 shares are unchanged. Apart from the BSE Bankex all the BSE sectoral indices are in green. BSE metal index is the top performer followed by the auto index.
The major losers on the indices were L&T down 4.16%, Wipro down 2.3%, SBI down 2.14%, and Bharti Airtel down 1.7%.
The major gainers on the indices were Tata Motors up 3.12%, Hindalco up 2.5%, Cipla up 2.45% and Grasim up 2.10%.
Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 215.75 down 0.21% from its previous close of Rs 216.20. Reliance was trading at Rs 925.60 up 0.52% from its previous close of Rs 920.80.
Infosys was trading at Rs 2,831.50 up 1.08% from its previous close of Rs 2,801.20. ITC was trading at Rs 161.70 down 1.07% from its previous close of Rs 163.45.
The markets have moved up marginally on account of some buying seen in select index pivotals.
Sensex @ 1340 hrs
At 1:40 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading at 9,936.74 up 52 points and the Nifty was trading at 2,896 up 6 points.
About 1341 shares have advanced, 837 shares declined, and 61 shares are unchanged.
The major gainers on the indices were Tata Motors up 3.12%, Hindalco up 2.5%, Cipla up 2.45% and Grasim up 2.10%.
The major losers on the indices were L&T down 4.11%, SBI down 2.51%, Wipro down 2.13% and ICICI Bank down 1.16%
Reliance was trading at Rs 930.55 up 1.06% from its previous close of Rs 920.80.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 2,855.00 up 1.92% from its previous close of Rs 2,801.20.
Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 163.25 down 0.12% from its previous close of Rs 163.45.
Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 257.10 up 2.15% from its previous close of Rs 251.70.
Sensex @ 1236 hrs
The markets continue to be nervous on account of sustained selling pressure. At 12.36 hrs pm, the Sensex was down 61 points at 9,823 and the Nifty down 24 points at 2866.
However, the market breadth was positve, about 1188 shares have advanced, 874 shares declined, and 57 shares are unchanged.
L&T, SBI, Wipro, Bharti Airtel and Sun Pharma were top loser on the indices. Tata Motors, Cipla, Grasim, Hindalco and Maruti Udyog were top gainers on the indices.
In BSE sectoral indices only the metal and auto indices were trading in green.
The BSE Metal index was up at 1.24% at 7593.95 amid gains were seen in Hindalco, and Tata Steel.
The BSE Auto index was up 0.29% at 4490.38. However, bank, capital goods, FMCG, pharma, technology, consumer durable and oil & gas stocks were witnessing selling pressure.
Tata Motors was the performer quoting at Rs 746.30, up Rs 20.70, or 2.85%.
Sensex @ 1141 hrs
The markets continue to witness volatility and were trading in the negative terrain. At 11:41 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 9,877 down 7 points. The Nifty was down at 2883 down 6 points.
About 958 shares have advanced, 921 shares declined, and 57 shares are unchanged.
Other than the BSE metal index, all the BSE sectoral indices are trading in the negative terrain. Selling pressure is witnessed by capital goods, banking and IT stocks.
The BSE metal index is up 1.45% whereas, the bankex is down 1.07%, IT index is down 0.88% and capital goods index is down 0.83%.
The major losers on the indices are L&T, SBI, Wipro, Guj Ambuja Cem and BPCL.
Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 215.00 down 0.56% from its previous close of Rs 216.20.
Reliance was trading at Rs 927.25 up 0.7% from its previous close of Rs 920.80.
ITC was trading at Rs 161.10 down 1.44% from its previous close of Rs 163.45.
Sensex @ 1035 hrs:
The markets are trading in the negative terrain amidst highly volatile trades. At 10:35 am, the BSE Senesx was trading at 9755 down 128 points. The Nifty was trading at 2857 down 32 points.
About 704 shares have advanced, 645 shares declined, and 38 shares are unchanged.
Other than the BSE metal index, all the BSE sectoral indices are trading in the negative terrain. Selling pressure is witnessed by capital goods, banking and IT stocks.
The major losers on the indices are L&T, Guj Ambuja Cem, TCS, SBI, Zee, SAIL and Wipro.
Among the gainers Reliance, Tata Motors, BHEL and Maruti Udyog. Stocks like Tata Tele, Mysore Cements and Indiabulls are trading strong.
Sensex @ 0958 hrs:
The markets opened on a flat note and gradually moved deeper into red. At 9:58 am, the BSE Sensex was down 89 points at 9794 and the Nifty was trading at 2861 down 28 points.
Metal, cement, capital goods stocks are trading weak
Asian markets are trading mixed Nikkei is trading marginally in green, Straits Times down nearly 1%, Taiwan is flattened out, Kospi is down 1.3% and Hang Seng down 0.6%.
The emerging markets are also trading mixed. Russia was down about a percent but Brazil was up 4% and Mexico and Chile were flat.
