The Sensex opened marginally (15 points) higher at 13,414. After exhibiting volatility in the initial trades, the index rallied to a high of 13,492 in morning trades.
The rally, however, was short-lived as the index came tumbling into the negative zone in early noon deals. Selling intensified thereafter, and the index plunged below the 13,000-mark to a low of 12,802 - down 690 points from the day's high.
Some pull back at the fag end saw the index recover some lost ground, but still finish below the psychological 13,000-mark at 12,995 - down 404 points.
In the process, the index has shed a whopping 977 points (7%) in just three trading sessions, i.e from Thursday close of 13,972 to today's close.
The BSE Mid-cap and Small-cap indices plunged over 4% each to 5370 and 6279, respectively.
The Metal index slumped nearly 4% to 8341. The Auto, Bankex, FMCG, Healthcare and Teck indices were down around 3% each to 5080, 6532, 1916, 3533 and 3404, respectively.
Over 80% stocks declined - out of 2,625 stocks traded, 2,160 declined, 424 moved up and the rest were unchanged today.
Index movers and shakers
All index stocks end in the red for the second day.
Grasim plunged over 7% (Rs 198) to Rs 2,506. ACC and Reliance Communications tumbled over 6% each to Rs 972 and Rs 403, respectively.
Gujarat Ambuja, SBI and Bharti Airtel have shed around 5% each to Rs 130, Rs 1,180 and Rs 577, respectively.
TCS and Ranbaxy dropped 4.5% each to Rs 1,119 and Rs 360, respectively.
NTPC, BHEL and Hindalco were down around 4% each to Rs 137, Rs 2,429 and Rs 167,
respectively. Reliance Energy, ONGC, ITC, HDFC, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Steel, Maruti, Bajaj Auto and Reliance were the other major losers today.
Value and volume toppers
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 330 crore followed by Indiabulls (Rs 165.15 crore), Parsvnath (Rs 158.55 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 136 crore) and SBI (Rs 133.30 crore).
Bellary Steel led the volume chart with trades of around 96.80 lakh shares followed by IFCI (91.40 lakh), Parsvnath (36.25 lakh), Shiva Cement (32.43 lakh) and Reliance Communications (32.36 lakh).
