With computers getting cheaper by the day and software tools being available in local languages, the rural people in the entire country will soon enjoy the benefits of information technology, Dayanidhi Maran, Union minister for communications and IT, said in Hyderabad Friday.

Terming the introduction of fonts and tools in Indian languages as a major step in this direction, the minister noted how a PC is being available for as low as Rs 9,970. Giving credit for this falling cost of PCs to the efforts of the Centre, Maran predicted further fall in the price of computers in the coming days.

The minister Friday launched the free fonts and the necessary software tools in Telugu developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing in Hyderabad.

He also spoke of the efforts being made in building wide area network and telecommunication systems across the country and said that by the end of this year, BSNL would provide 40 lakh more telephone lines in Andhra Pradesh.

Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy formally released the CDs.
