March 17, 2005 19:41 IST

In a bid to reassure consumers in the wake of an FDA notice to Johnson & Johnson's baby products, the company said that it is studying the notice and will respond within the stipulated period.

Brushing aside the issue of harmful chemicals in its products, J&J said, "All the baby care products in India including baby oil meet stringent global quality standards of Johnson and Johnson worldwide and are sold under the approval and licence from the FDA", a company release said.

The company said that 200 safety tests and exclusive product trials have been conducted in India and across the world on babies and adults to ensure that the J&J formulations are mild and safe for babies.

Govt may take action against J&J

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration had issued a showcause notice to Johnson and Johnson, on Tuesday for "misbranding" its baby products, especially its baby oil, and asked it to remove the word "baby" from several of its products meant for infants.

At least six products, including baby shampoo and baby oil came under the FDA scanner.

According to J&J, the baby oil uses a pure grade of mineral and has been clinically proven to be safe for use on a baby's sensitive skin.

"Johnson and Johnson scrupulously follows all regulatory guidelines in India and adheres to global standards of ethics in every country, the release added.
