Sensex gains 28 points at close

The Sensex on Friday opened five points lower at 5,410. The markets displayed volatility in the opening session as weakness in select old and new economy stocks saw the index slip below the 5,400-mark to an intra-day low of 5,387.

The index later reverted back into the green, spurting to an intra-day high of 5,497.

The Sensex, however, pared gains towards the closing hours on profit-taking in select stocks, and signed off the week with a gain of 28 points at 5,443. The Nifty added eight points to close at 1,725.

Infosys attracted considerable buying support since opening deals, and surged 5.32% (Rs 262) to close at Rs 5,187. While Satyam shot up 4.22% (Rs 12) to Rs 305, Wipro ended marginally higher at Rs 1,425.

HLL moved up 2.14% (Rs 3) to Rs 148. Reliance closed up a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 523. ITC, however, ended at lower levels with a loss of 1.60% (Rs 17) at Rs 1,069.

SBI moved up 1.23% (Rs 7) to Rs 566. BHEL was up 1.34% (Rs 7) at Rs 566. While MTNL dropped 3.67% (Rs 5) to Rs 130, HPCL ended with a rupee loss at Rs 469.

Bajaj added 1.89% (Rs 16) to Rs 843. Tata Motors was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 454. Hero Honda, however, closed down a tad at Rs 452.

L&T lost a per cent (Rs 6) to Rs 557. Grasim and Gujarat Ambuja slipped from higher levels to finish at Rs 1,013 (down Rs 10) and Rs 287 (down a rupee), respectively. ACC, however, was up a per cent (Rs 2) at Rs 247.

Hindalco mopped up 1.72% gains (Rs 22) to Rs 1,278. While Reliance Energy added 1.15% (Rs 8) to Rs 709, Tisco closed up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 388.

Bharti Tele ended with a loss of 4.58% (Rs 6) at Rs 135. ICICI Bank lost 1.85% (Rs 5) to Rs 276.

Cipla ended weak with a loss of 1.94% (Rs 22) at Rs 1,107. Ranbaxy also ended at lower levels with a loss of 1.21% (Rs 11) at Rs 935. Dr. Reddy's, however, clocked a per cent gain (Rs 10) to close at Rs 1,011.
